Each of our five unique guest rooms is named after a pioneer in lighting history–a nod to the building’s beginnings as The Austrian Gas Lamp Company. Get to know the inventors’ innovations and how they illuminated the world in more ways than one.

Get to know the faces behind the suites…

Davy

The Enlightened Chemist

Sir Humphrey Davy, an eminent chemist and inventor, is best known for inventing the Davy lamp, a safety lamp for use in flammable atmospheres. This invention not only saved countless lives in the mining industry but also marked a significant advancement in the field of lighting. The Davy Suite captures the essence of his contributions through its classic design and thoughtful amenities. It offers a serene retreat that pays homage to Davy’s brilliance and his dedication to improving safety through science.

Tesla

The Visionary Genius

Nikola Tesla, a name synonymous with innovation and genius, made groundbreaking contributions to alternating current (AC) power, which became the standard for electricity distribution. His visionary ideas extended beyond just lighting, influencing many aspects of modern electrical engineering. The Tesla Suite embodies his forward-thinking ethos and passion for discovery. Guests staying in this suite are treated to an atmosphere of modern elegance with a touch of futuristic flair, celebrating Tesla’s endless quest for knowledge and progress.

Latimer

The Master Draftsman

Lewis Latimer was a brilliant inventor and engineer who played a crucial role in the development of the electric light bulb. Born to parents who had escaped slavery, Latimer’s remarkable journey saw him becoming an essential member of Thomas Edison’s team. He is best known for inventing a carbon filament, which significantly improved the durability and affordability of light bulbs. The suite dedicated to Latimer honors his ingenuity and perseverance, featuring sophisticated designs and a warm, inviting glow that mirrors the lasting impact of his contributions.

Adams

The Luminary of Stage and Screen

Maude Adams, an illustrious actress of the early 20th century, may seem an unexpected namesake in the context of lighting pioneers. However, her contribution to the field is nothing short of revolutionary. Adams was instrumental in the development and adoption of stage lighting innovations that transformed theatrical performances. She collaborated with General Electric to experiment with different lighting techniques, ultimately enhancing the audience’s visual experience. Staying in the Maude Suite, you are enveloped in an ambiance that reflects the elegance and creativity of early stagecraft, echoing her pioneering spirit.

Edison

The Inventor Extraordinaire

No list of lighting pioneers would be complete without Thomas Edison. Often credited with inventing the light bulb, Edison’s real triumph was perfecting it and making electric lighting practical for widespread use. His invention of the incandescent light bulb, along with the establishment of electrical power distribution, transformed modern society. The Edison Suite is a tribute to his relentless innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Here, guests can enjoy a blend of vintage charm and modern comfort, reflecting the timeless influence of Edison’s work.

At The Gas Lamp Hotel, each suite offers more than just a place to rest—it provides a narrative, a connection to the pioneering spirits who lit the way for future innovations. Visiting a new city and staying a while can be an exciting experience. While it’s true that a lot of people like to get into town early and see as much as possible during the day, there are some pretty convincing reasons why you should consider spending at least a day or two in the Old City section of Philadelphia.

Here are five of them:

The History

When you stay in Old City, Philadelphia, you’ll immediately be immersed in the city’s rich history. The area was first settled in 1685, and it has been a hotbed of activity ever since. Today, Old City is full of beautiful architecture and historical sites. You’ll find plenty to see during your stay here!

The Sights

The neighborhood is home to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. If you’re planning on visiting any of these attractions, we recommend staying nearby as they can be packed with tourists during peak season.

The Betsy Ross House is just two blocks from The Gas Lamp Hotel and is one of the oldest houses in Philadelphia still standing today. Today, it serves as a museum where guests can tour through this historic house and learn about its history as well as that of its famous owner.

Elfreth’s Alley Historic District is another must-see attraction in Old City and contains many examples of early American architecture dating back to 1728-1798—the best part? It’s right next door! If you’re looking for an even closer look at these beautiful homes without having to walk too far away from your accommodation then consider taking a guided tour through Elfreth’s Alley!

The First Bank of America was built by Alexander Hamilton during his time serving under George Washington; today it houses artifacts from throughout our country’s history including documents signed by Thomas Jefferson himself!

The Walkability

If you’re looking for a compact, walkable area of the city that’s easy to get around, look no further than Old City. Within its five square miles, there are plenty of cool places to explore. And if you’re up for it, you can even walk from one end of the neighborhood to another in about 30 minutes.

Old City is an excellent place for getting lost and found again—and it’s just as fun no matter how many times you’ve done it before!

The Food

Old City is a foodie’s paradise. It boasts a variety of bars, restaurants, and cafes with tons of diverse options. You won’t want to leave town without trying the seafood at The Twisted Tail, a casual yet elegant restaurant in Old City’s Head House Square area specializing in seasonal American cuisine. In addition to their famous crab cakes, you can order their signature filet mignon or one of the other delicious entrees on their menu.

Some of the most popular eateries and cafes are located near Washington Square Park, including La Colombe Coffee Roasters, which serves up some of the best coffee in town; Fork offers sophisticated “New American” cuisine that includes a popular brunch; National Mechanics is a casual eatery in a former bank building serving American fare and a great spot for after dinner drinks, craft beer and live music; If you prefer something sweet check out Franklin Fountain where bow-tie-wearing staff serve up treats in a classic ice cream parlor.

Old City, Philadelphia is home to some of the most interesting and exciting destinations in the country. From the history to the food, there’s something for everyone. With so much to do and see, it would be a shame not to spend at least one night here.

The Gas Lamp Hotel–currently under construction and set for a 2024 opening–caters to everyone from single travelers to mid-sized groups. With a unique focus on events, the hotel is designed to accommodate wedding parties, corporate travelers and more in an elevated, intimate setting.

But do you know the history of the century-old building it occupies?

“Not everything of value in life comes from books- experience the world.”

Thomas Edison

Before electricity was sufficiently widespread, gas was the predominant method of lighting for major cities like Philadelphia. Often touted as a “city of firsts,” Philadelphia is home to the first private residence in the U.S. to be illuminated by gas flame as of 1816.

The Gas Lamp Hotel pays homage to the city’s history as well as the building it occupies. Before the boutique hotel opened its doors in 2023, the building was home to the Austrian Gas Lamp Company, a local business established in 1845. What’s more is the hotel is adjacent to America’s oldest continually inhabited residential street, Elfreth’s Alley.

Now, The Gas Lamp Hotel promises to serve as an elevated escape for travelers with modern, yet timeless accommodations.
