The Gas Lamp Hotel–currently under construction and set for a 2024 opening–caters to everyone from single travelers to mid-sized groups. With a unique focus on events, the hotel is designed to accommodate wedding parties, corporate travelers and more in an elevated, intimate setting.
But do you know the history of the century-old building it occupies?
“Not everything of value in life comes from books- experience the world.”
Thomas Edison
Before electricity was sufficiently widespread, gas was the predominant method of lighting for major cities like Philadelphia. Often touted as a “city of firsts,” Philadelphia is home to the first private residence in the U.S. to be illuminated by gas flame as of 1816.
The Gas Lamp Hotel pays homage to the city’s history as well as the building it occupies. Before the boutique hotel opened its doors in 2023, the building was home to the Austrian Gas Lamp Company, a local business established in 1845. What’s more is the hotel is adjacent to America’s oldest continually inhabited residential street, Elfreth’s Alley.
Now, The Gas Lamp Hotel promises to serve as an elevated escape for travelers with modern, yet timeless accommodations.
